I believe that every student needs and deserves the integration of technology into their education.
When I was an educator in a fourth grade classroom I became aware of the shift in education around 2005. My fourth grade team and I filled our classrooms with laptops, wireless internet, digital cameras, video cameras, document cameras, GPS receivers, SmartBoards and photo printers by writing grants. With those tools in our hands, and in the hands of our students, we were able to begin to transform the education our students were receiving. After seeing the change it made in my 60 fourth graders I realized that there were many more students in my rural LEA that were NOT getting an education with technology integrated. That was when I decided to return to school to get my Master of Arts in Education in Instructional Technology from East Carolina University.
As the tech facilitator at the two high schools now I am making a greater impact. By teaching their teachers ways to engage them using the laptops I am able to reach 1500 students in one day. The transition is slow. Just as Rome was not built in a day.... the educators are not able to change everything about their methods and practices in one day. It is a gradual process that takes training and trying! I provide my teachers with tools that will make their teaching easier and the learning of the students more authentic and meaningful. Through my enthusiasm and encouragement I lead my teachers to try new methods and "step outside the box"!
